Fat Man Fading Away.
Thursday, January 24, 2008, 3:01 PM

Dear Diary - creeping in the shadows of the walls that surround his world, phasing in and out of reality, blurred by the nature of doubt that surrounds the ambivalence of his reality, the fat man momentarily forgets to remember who he is and starts to fade away...

Doorway - Book City No. 78 (With Ladder).
Sunday, May 06, 2007, 8:16 AM

Dear Diary - I have climbed the ladder and knocked at the gateway to the City of Books...I am still waiting...

redeye A wall of rust-coloured red bricks is home to two similarly coloured timber doors, their painted surface peeling and chipping away under the effect of the weather...the niche that holds the doors is a meter or so above the ground, so a ladder has been thoughtfully provided to accommodate access to "BOOK CITY - NO. 78"...it is sunny now, so the shadows play a part in this scene...

yellowsound Cars...pigeons...twittering parrots...more pigeons...beneath it all there is the constant rumbling of an idling truck...a crow gives a short, lazy "caw"...

Listen to a sound bite from this location...
(*.mp3 format, 940KB)

greensmell Bricks and mortar with the musk of the years of rain, sun, wind and the type of vegetation that grows in the hidden corners...

bluetouch The rungs of the ladder are smooth and cool...the bricks are warm and solid...chips and flakes of paint crumble and fall away from the door at my touch...

purpletaste The bricks leave a slightly salty taste and I notice that the small, gritty particles taste a little like sandpaper...

Doorway Near Essendon Airport.
Thursday, April 19, 2007, 7:04 AM

Dear Diary - Some doorways present more questions than answers...

redeye A huge expanse of corrugated metal - the entire building seems to be made of nothing else...towering walls of grey zincalume(?)...a couple of outcropping rooms standing at least two or three stories tall break off from the main building...they are of the same material and each is crowned with a ventilation stack, curved to maximise the intake or outlet of the air...in the middle of one wall of this otherwise windowless building, a set of concrete steps atop a bricked base, a crude steel tubing safety rail, a brown painted doorway that leads...inside..to...who knows where?...on the outside wall, near the doorway, there is a warning sign...

yellowsound Cars and trucks on the freeway...a plane struggles to be heard above the rumbling of the traffic...some birds also compete, smoothing the surrounding thunder...

Listen to a sound bite from this location...
(*.mp3 format, 940KB)

greensmell The smell of the earth is stronger here as it mixes with the diesel and petrol of the freeway vehicles...the air feels moist at this time of the day and the building throws off a definite "metally" aroma...if you've got an old aluminium cooking pot, give it a scrape with a spoon and take a deep, close sniff - you'll see what I mean...

bluetouch Under the feet of my tripod, the grass feels soft and cool...the metal skin of the building feels smooth and cold blooded...I touch the building, I touch the skin of a snake...

purpletaste The flavours of the moist air blend with the metallic harmonies of the building...I must have swallowed some sea-water...

Heart of Fire - Flinders Place.
Saturday, March 31, 2007, 10:13 AM

Dear Diary - This is more than just a doorway...it's a Roll-A-Door-Way...leading into the warmth, wrapping and surrounding with the glow of its interior's hear of fire...such a comfortable place to take a break and have a coffee...
...ps...just to avoid any confusion - the coffee shop is NOT called "Heart of Fire", it just looks like it has one...
