Dear Diary - a beautiful, sunnyday and everyone is there...they all flock to take as much advantage as possible - to suck as much vitamin D from the atmosphere into their bodies as they possibly can.

Hopefully this doesn't result in a worldwide shortage in the supply of vitamin D...

Dear Diary - salt water plays havoc with my mechanisms, but the risk is worth it to enjoy the light and warmth of the sun and the cooling of the enveloping water and the view of all the people busy within their own small worlds of relaxation and escape...

Preparing the Bins 2.
Thursday, April 19, 2007, 11:13 AM

Dear Diary - this isn't their usual work...they are preparing the bins for use as receptacles for the delivery of recycled/grey water to the many trees and plants in the local parks...

redeye Here a worker bends over a stack of bright, yellow lids to select one to put onto one of the currently lidless bins...not all of the bins are the usual olive green - if you look carefully you might see some "rusty" coloured bins awaiting their crowns of golden yellow...

yellowsound A tram onPascoe Vale Road passes as the birds - parrots, wattle bird and seagulls - call to one another...the council workers hammer the lids firmly to the bins and a child playing in nearby Queens Park calls out...the hammering continues - there is a job to be done...

Listen to a sound bite from this location...
(*.mp3 format, 940KB)

greensmell Take a handfull of gumnuts, crush them up with some of the leaves from the same tree, add a generous scoop of dry, dusty soil and shake them all together in a large, plastic bin liner for a couple of minutes...let it settle then take note of the nuances in the perfume of the contents, being careful not to inhale any of the particles that might have been stirred up...

bluetouch The metallic rods of the axles are rigid and steely, giving testament to the ability of these bins to carry the burden of the water that will be theirs...

purpletaste Even though the grass and soil hold their own against the slight chemical smell of the bins, I don't think I am in any danger of developing PICA any time soon...the desire to eat soil and grass just doesn't quite seem to make it onto my list of gastronomique delights and "must tries"...

Preparing the Bins 1.
Thursday, April 19, 2007, 11:12 AM

Dear Diary - Near Queen's Park, in the grounds of the swimming pool, a couple of council workers preparing some big bins...

redeye Olive green bins with their brightly coloured yellow lids lie prostrate, in rows, waiting for the workers to come and make them complete - fixing their lids on and attaching the axle for their wheels...their green echos the green of the surrounding trees...

yellowsound There is the sound of the seagulls who have taken over the nearby swimming pool during its downtime...lids and axles are hammered into place...parrots argue with the gulls...in Pascoe Vale road, a tram trundles by with a ring of its bell...

Listen to a sound bite from this location...
(*.mp3 format, 940KB)

greensmell The bins have that plasticy-chemical smell...the gums and nearby trees provide a more bushlike timbre to the overall aromas...

bluetouch It's a beautiful, day and the sun of the morning has made the bins fairly warm to the touch, the smooth plastic of their skin seems to "grab" slightly then give over as I rub their exposed bellies...

purpletaste Maybe chewing on a bin bag or licking a frisbee would give you some idea of the tastes that are here...

Dear Diary - it's not all glamour and "babewatch"...sometimes the sun is hiding away and the wind is cold and still some idiots insist it's the perfect weather for a dip in the surf...
